What Handel achieved in Messiah is a wonderful blend of elegant, Italianate melody alternating with virtuosic vocalism for the soloists and the composer's characteristic ceremonial style which endeared him to the British public. Across the span of 250 years, Messiah still holds its extraordinary grip on musicians and audiences alike. 13 - 14 - "Handel is the greatest composer that ever lived. Franz Hasenohrl) 10 - Mozart Horn Quintet 11 - Brahms Sextet in B flat major 12 - 13 - The ECO Ensemble plays Frans Hasenorhl’s chamber version of Till Eulenspiegel, a tone poem by Richard Strauss chronicling the pranks and misadventures of the German folk hero of the same name and Mozart’s Horn Quintet, a paragon of balance and tonal beauty, referred by Albert Einstein as “a love duet between the horn and violin”. 14 - 15 - “The ECO plays with taut ensemble and an aristocratic finesse of sound and phrasing. They are joined by Sir Colin Davis who, 45 years ago, conducted the ECO’s first national tour, first recording and conducted the first concert to bring the orchestra into the limelight. 16 - 17 - "As identical twins playing in a piano duo, the Pekinel sisters have an uncanny, almost telepathic ability to match each other to a microsecond in even the most elaborate rubato.” 18 - The Guardian 19 - 20 - "A superb performance that found Colin Davis at his liveliest, and the ECO at its most incisive and responsive.
